Burf.org.uk was orginally formed in 2004 as a mini version of Burf.com with the purpose of just returning results for the .org domain suffix. In 2008 the Burf.com domain was sold though the site remains unchanged and is still a search engine. Since then Simon Burfield, the creator of Burf.com has been working on new search engine related projects. In April 2009, he decided to resurrect Burf.org.uk as a testing site for different backend search technologies that he creates. Currently, the 2 main ideas are a UK only search engine which has a strict policy on what sites are allowed in and a DMOZ / Wikipedia hybrid search engine.
